Tristate Area: Over the past few months, hikers and wildlife photographers throughout the region have been making claims of strange ‘portal like’ encounters while enjoying the outdoors. The common thread throughout each story seems to be the appearance of a rotating green triangle inside of a purple circle that appears out of nowhere. Almost every tale being told in this regard seems to mention a ‘warping’ of reality as these ‘portals’ expand before disappearing completely. While the idea of hidden portals deep in the woods may seem outlandish, there are several instances of video footage that support the claims.
There have been over one hundred instances of people experiencing this phenomena since the spring. For the purpose of getting to the bottom of what this could all mean, we attempted to reach out to government officials. Unfortunately, we were told that no official statement would be made at this time and, while they’re looking into the validity of the footage available, their initial feeling is that it is all part of an internet hoax being carried out by science fiction enthusiasts.
We were able to track down several of the individuals who have posted footage in order to get a first hand account of their experience.
Experience at Caumsett State Park (June 2021)
Michelle Keane was enjoying a sunset stroll in Caumsett State Park on Long Island. It was a cloudy day, and she was looking forward to watching the massive storm carry over the Long Island Sound from the beach. As she was walking her favorite trail behind the dunes, she arrived at a broken down bridge that she had seen a thousand times before. She noticed the triangle/circle-like object faintly at the end of the path. Soon the color seemed to drop from her surroundings and it was as if the object was getting closer. Ms. Keane quickly grew disoriented, and the whole park seemed to be melting. She likened it to the movie the Matrix, but with an eery, “other dimensional” vibe. She closed her eyes for a split second and when she opened them, the object was now right in front of her. Ms. Keane reported a sense of calm washing over her in its presence. “It was as if the portal was alive and I was no longer alone” she continued. Before Ms. Keane knew it, everything was back to normal. She had convinced herself that it was all part of some lucid daydream until she checked her phone upon arriving back at her car and found the video below. She doesn’t even remember filming it.
Covert Houses at Minnewaska State Park
John and Elizabeth Ryan were on a short family getaway in High Falls this summer when they decided to do a quick hike at Lake Minnewaska State Park on their last day in the area. They were on a relatively public trail to the west of the lake when John noticed a small wooden shack just off the beaten path. When the couple ventured closer, they noticed a glowing green triangle in a window just below the roof. Both John and Elizabeth reported entering a sort of trance as the triangle began to grow, now surrounded by a purple circle. While they couldn’t seem to move, the ‘portal’ did. It grew and exited the house and, as it did, the shack appeared to be sucked into the ether. Before long, the same matrix-esque ‘melting’ of the park that Ms. Keane reported began to happen. The moment lasted less than a minute, but the Ryans said it felt like an eternity. They also felt as if the portal was somehow living and watching them. In another similarity to Ms. Keane’s experience, the couple do not remember recording the instance but found this short video on Elizabeth’s phone after returning back to their car.
Glitch at Kaaterskill Falls
Local outdoors photographer, William Gorsich, was taking advantage of the ‘mood’ created by a foggy morning in Kaaterskill Falls State Park when things got decidedly more eery. Deep in the woods, Mr. Gorsich was setting up a shot of the tree-line, when he noticed the similarly reported ‘portal’ occur somewhat in the distance. Convinced he was imagining it, he continued to set up his shot. Over the next minute or so, the portal seemed to jump to trees closer to Mr. Gorsich. Eventually, he found himself within a couple of feet of the phenomena without having moved from his original spot. The photographer then experienced a warping of reality and expanding portal somewhere between those of the first two accounts. What sets this particular story apart was the “glitch” that Mr. Gorsich reported and a feeling of being pulled towards the portal.
Bachelor Party Surprise at Kaaterskill State Park
As an avid outdoors enthusiast, Daniel Trimboli had made a day hike at Kaaterskill a central part of his bachelor party this past August. Not even five minutes into their excursion, the group came across this abandoned train station. There appeared to be a pulsing light coming from the building as Mr. Trimboli and his friends came near. Wary of what they were seeing, the party never came within 500 yards of the abandoned structure. However, the best man, Brian Kosack, happened to be filming for a video he was making to commemorate their trip and caught some footage. On their way back to their cars that afternoon, they passed the spot where they had originally seen the train station, but it was no longer there. Mr. Kosack, who was aware of the portal encounter at the same park earlier in the summer, noticed a similar portal to what was filmed by Mr. Gorsich while he was editing the footage and immediately reported it to local authorities.
Vanishing Saliboat on the Long Island Sound
Anna Grubauer was enjoying sunset on the beach at Hammonasset State Park in September, when a sailboat traveling peacefully on the Sound caught her eye. As a TikTok enthusiast, Ms. Grubauer began filming it for a piece of content she had in mind. After about a minute of filming, a bit of a fog set over what was otherwise a crisp late summer day. She barely noticed the ‘portal’ at first and, by her account, it aggressively consumed the vessel before she even really grasped that it was there. She likened it to a predator attacking prey. The sky grew dark, and a rogue lightning bolt seemed to strike the portal just as it came upon the sailboat. The portal and the boat disappeared in an instance, and the serenity of the day was restored. While the Trimboli party had reported the train station no longer being there on their hike back, this was the first instance of a disappearance caught on camera. The Grubauer story also indicated that whatever this portal was, it was becoming much more aggressive.
Lost Footage in Nissequogue + The Disappearance of James Baptiste
In early October, 23 year old aspiring filmmaker, James Baptiste, was reported missing. In police statements, some friends had mentioned that Mr. Baptiste had told them he was going to Nissequogue State Park that night to capture footage for a short horror film he was making about the abandoned psychiatric hospital at Kings Park. While there hasn’t been a single piece of evidence pertaining to Mr. Baptiste’s current whereabouts, two hikers came across an old camcorder in the park last week believed to have belonged to the filmmaker. The footage was shocking. The portal reported so many times before could be seen inside the entrance to a drainage area and, through the shape, you could faintly see what appeared to be a demonic face. At this point the footage seems to cut off.
While the possibility that these occurrences are part of an internet hoax (some suspect its a publicity stunt for Mr. Baptiste’s short film) exists, authorities do recommend that people proceed with extra caution on any outdoors activities, particularly in remote areas. They are also asking that people not venture into the parks after dark.
Ask any wildlife photographer or explore based on Long Island and they’ll tell you that our home turf does not get nearly the credit it deserves when it comes to species diversity. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that most people think Long Island has a couple of raccoons, a possum here and there, and way too many deer out east and that basically sums it up.
This couldn’t be further from the truth. So for this article, we worked with some of the best wildlife photographers based on Long Island to highlight 10 species that most people might not know we have here.
